SKT-LMC Picnic

Just a reminder, the SKT-LMC picnic is August 27, at 12:30 p.m. at the St. Paul Firemen’s Exempts at 690 Thomas Avenue.

There will be games for kids, a bounce house, and a dunk booth.  Anyone wishing to be a dunkee should bring a change of clothes.  There will also be a sweet surprise!

The picnic will be catered by Sticky Lips BBQ.  If you are able, please bring a dish to pass.  Soda will be provided and there will be a cash bar.  Free will offerings are gratefully accepted.

If you haven’t RSVPed, don’t worry.  There will be plenty of food.

For those who are not familiar with the Exempts, it is just 1.3 miles from St. Thomas the Apostle:

  1. From the church, head south on St. Paul Blvd.
  2. At the first traffic light, turn right onto Thomas Avenue.
  3. Drive about 1 mile. The Exempts will be on the right.

SUMMER COURSE OFFERING!

FROM THE LORD’S SUPPER TO THE HOLY MASS

Instructed by:

Rev. George Heyman, Ph.D. – President of St. Bernard’s

The Most Reverend Salvatore R. Matano – Bishop of Rochester

From their earliest recorded moments Christians have celebrated their faith in the risen Lord Jesus with a meal which was both physical and spiritual. This course examines the development of this uniquely Christian ritual meal tracing its roots from the earliest biblical record through its late antique, medieval and modern forms. We will also explore the varied Eucharistic theologies and liturgical expressions evident in contemporary Christian communions today, but special attention will be paid to the theological and historical dimensions connected with Eucharistic practice as evidenced in the Roman Catholic Mass.

Location: St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry

Tuesdays, 6:30 – 9:00 pm

May 24, 31; June 7, 14, 21, 28 & July 5

WHEN YOU COME TO CHURCH, please turn OFF all cell phones, hand-held electronic devices, pagers, watch alarms, etc. ALSO, remember to dress appropriately (neatly and modestly).  Unfortunately, in many churches today, people tend to “dress down” for Mass.  How can this be??? RESPECT and REVERENCE toward God and neighbor (i.e. charity) should determine how we present ourselves in the House of God.  Thank you, in advance, for your courtesy and cooperation.

THERE ARE (AT LEAST) THREE REASONS to maintain a prayerful, quiet atmosphere in the church proper before and after services:  (1) RESPECT for the House of God, (2) REVERENCE for the Blessed Sacrament, and (3) REGARD for those who want to pray in peace.  The guiding principle should be devotion NOT commotion. Please carry on your friendly conversations in the church vestibules  (with inside doors closed), outside, or at the coffee hours.  Reverence and friendliness can and should co-exist—in their proper settings!!

THANK YOU to all those hard-working people who enabled us to have a glorious Easter this year: our organist/choir director and singers, our church cleaners, our flower decorators, our money counters, our servers and ushers, our faithful Community members and…OUR MANY VISITORS!  Our SKT-LMC is showing more and more encouraging signs of RESURGENT LIFE IN THE RISEN CHRIST.

COFFEE HOURS

TODAY on Divine Mercy Sunday (Low Sunday), i.e. April 3rd, there will be a coffee hour after each Mass. Please join us to share the JOY and WARMTH of Easter and Mercy celebration.   On the second Sunday of April, neither Mass will have a coffee hour.

OUR MOST REVEREND BISHOP, SALVATORE MATANO, will be visiting us here on Sunday July 19. As a way of welcoming him ahead of time, why not drop him a line expressing your pleasure that he will be visiting? Sincere and brief notes can be addressed to him at: 1150 Buffalo Road Rochester, NY 14624.

THE EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL, adjacent to the Parish Center must continue to be a very important powerhouse of prayer for us and for people in our area. Hours of adoration are on Mondays through Fridays from 9 AM to 10 PM (11 PM on Tuesday and Friday). WE NEED MORE ADORERS TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERY HOUR IS COVERED. Please consider signing up for an hour or being on the substitute list. Contact Marie O’Leary at 467-1982.

FAITH FORMATION for our young people (a.k.a. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION, C.C.D. or CATECHETICS) is a pressing need in our Community life. But first we have to determine the number and ages of the children to be involved AND the number of volunteer teachers willing to be of help. A FAITH FORMATION program, even a small one, should be an important PRIORITY for us, beginning in September. Of special import is preparation for FIRST PENANCE, FIRST COMMUNION, and CONFIRMATION.
DO YOU HAVE A YOUNG PERSON (GRADE SCHOOL OR HIGH SCHOOL) TO ENROLL? ARE YOU AVAILABLE AND REASONABLY QUALIFIED TO BE AN INSTRUCTOR? If so, AFTER MASS TODAY, come to the South entrance (vestibule) of the church to sign up. Someone will be there to take your information. This will give us a good idea of numbers, how to proceed, and what we can offer realistically. SIGN UP TODAY. (Second notice)

PRE-PRINTED DONATION ENVELOPES – If you have filled out a census form and have registered with our Community, we have arranged for you to receive your pre-printed donation envelopes in the mail. The envelopes will show your envelope number as well, and a 2 month supply will be mailed to you periodically. Please look for your envelopes this month which will cover the months of July and August. If you do not receive your envelopes, please call 484-1810 or email [email protected].

MEDICAL PERSONNEL ALERT! In the rare event of a medical emergency happening during church services, what should we do? We need to have a plan in place that includes medically-trained persons responding immediately to a person-in distress, while we call 9-1-1 and wait for the ambulance to arrive. To discuss such a plan, we propose to bring together medical personnel (DOCTORS, RN’s, LPN’s, EMT’s, etc.) among us who are willing to be “on call” during Mass. To get prepared, all we need is to arrange a short meeting on a Sunday morning (between Masses?). In this regard, a little communication will go a long way! Are you qualified and willing to be on alert? Jim Holden is coordinating this. Call him at 585-598-2695.

COFFEE HOUR TODAY? You bet! See you there?

(WORDS of PROCESSIONAL HYMN for both Masses:)

ALL YE WHO SEEK A COMFORT SURE
               (Melody: St. Anne)

All ye who seek a comfort sure
In trouble and distress,
Whatever sorrows vex the mind,
Or guilt the soul oppress.

Jesus Who gave Himself for you
Upon the Cross to die,
Opens to you His Sacred Heart;
Oh, to that Heart draw nigh.

Ye hear how kindly He invites;
Ye hear His words so blest;
“All ye that labor, come to Me,
And I will give you rest.”

What meeker than the Savior’s Heart?
As on the Cross He lay;
It did His murderers forgive,
And for their pardon pray.

O Heart, Thou joy of Saints on high,
Thou hope of sinners here!
Attracted by those loving words,
To Thee we lift our prayer.

All laud to God the Father be,
All laud to God the Son,
All laud to God the Holy Ghost,
While endless ages run!

ARE YOU THINKING of WRITING A LETTER OF GRATITUDE to Bishop Salvatore Matano for re-activating St. Thomas the Apostle as the home of the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Latin Mass Community? His address is: 1150 Buffalo Road, Rochester, NY 14624. Let your letter be sincere and brief!

WE ARE PLANNING to have a MAY CROWNING CEREMONY in honor of Our Blessed Lady next SUNDAY at the beginning of both Masses. It will involve the procession to her sanctuary shrine, a brief prayer, and the crowning of the statue. A simple but meaningful ceremony, acknowledging Our Lady’s QUEENSHIP over us, over our lives, and over our Community.

COFFEE HOUR TODAY in the Parish Center, after both Masses. Will you join us?

CONGRATULATIONS to Beatriz and Gabriel Barraclough-Tan who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this past week from Bishop Salvatore Matano. May they always be faithful and joyful in their profession of the Catholic Faith.

MATTHEW WALTER, our long-time LMC friend, has “come home” to us. After seven years as a member of the Institute of Christ the King, he has decided to continue his journey to the Priesthood by a different path. We pray for him in this time of transition in his life and we commend him to the prayers and protection of Saint Joseph, to whom Matthew is especially devoted.

NEXT SUNDAY, on the glorious Solemnity / Feast of Pentecost, the 9 AM will be an English Choir Mass and the 11:15 AM will be a Latin High Mass. We are so grateful to John Morabito and all our singers who work hard to make our Masses so musically splendid and uplifting!

TODAY WE WELCOME FATHER PETER MOTTOLA as celebrant of the 11:15 Mass. He has helped us in the past, but now he is leaving for a while to take up full-time studies in Canon Law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He anticipates finishing the degree in the summer of 2016 and subsequently returning to our Diocese (when, hopefully, he will be of further assistance to us here!). We will keep him in our prayers.
